There are so many things that I love about God. One of them is how He takes the hidden and humble seemingly insignificant and reveals His bigger than life plan. As I dive into the story of Samuel anointing Saul, I can’t help but smile.
It was just another boring day in the village, when Saul’s dad asked Him to go and find some of their lost donkeys. He took a servant to head out looking.
After searching near and far, the servant suggested asking a man of God in a nearby town for directions. He tells Saul, “Everything he says comes true.” Saul was hesitant. But the servant kept on and they were tired from the unsuccessful journey so he agreed.
Just before the man was going to leave the town he sees Saul and His servant entering. What Saul did not know is that God already spoke to Samuel. Telling Him that Saul would be arriving in the afternoon and he was to deliver an important message to Him.

Anoint Him ruler over my people Israel; he will deliver them from the hand of the Philistines.” – 1 Samuel 9:16
Then when he sees Him enter the gates, the Lord confirmed saying, “this is the man that will govern my people.”
Meanwhile, Saul being clueless and just trying to find some donkeys starts to ask where the prophet is to get directions. Instead, Samuel tells Him, actually, I want you to come for a big meal and you will be head of the table. I will tell you all that is in your heart. Oh and btw don’t worry all your donkeys will be returned to you. Saul answered,
But am I not a Benjamite, from the smallest tribe of Israel? And is not my clan the least of all the clans of the tribe of Benjamin? Why do you say such a thing to me?”
Samuel then pours oil on Saul’s head and tells Him, “The Lord has anointed you leader over His inheritance. You will be King.”
I mean, wow think about that, here’s a guy no one knew, that was hidden in a village who just went to find His father’s lost donkeys, but within a short time becomes King.
It wasn’t the haughty, popular guy. It wasn’t the one that worked hard and earned His position or the one born of privilege. He never would have imagined such a thing.
SO WHY DOES GOD CHOOSE THE UNKNOWN?
First of all, He looks for pure hearts. He could care less about how you built your own kingdom or how deserving you think you are. He is after His glory and nothing displays that more than someone that can never take credit. That someone who will look back and say “only God could have promoted me.”
Even though God knew that Saul would fail, He still chose Him. Though God knew that David would fail, He still chose Him. God knew that we would fail, He still chose us. He has greatness in mind for you.

I’m really struggling in this area right now. Thank you for this reminder that even though I feel I’ve failed often and don’t feel hopeful right now, God sees the bigger picture.
