This week has brought a heatwave and it’s important to keep hydrated. If you haven’t had enough to drink then your body can give out unexpectedly, which is also a spiritual lesson. As I was diving into John 4, the telling of the Samaritan women, I got a revelation. It’s so funny to me how classic Jesus sets her up. He asks her for a drink knowing she would question Him.
The Samaritan woman said to Him, You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)” – John 4:9
You see, He targeted this woman not because He needed a drink but knowing that she did.
Jesus answered her, If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked Him and he would have given you living water.” –John 4:10
Our culture is always thirsty. Always trying the next thing, scrolling down the next page and buying the next faster gadget. No new diet, shopping spree, vacation, man, job or popularity can quench it. You can try it all but until you tap into the source of living water, you won’t be truly satisfied. The good news is that He gives it oh so freely.
Everyone who drinks of other things will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” – John 4:13-14
This is no accident. It’s another setup. An intentional design from our Creator. We were created with a God shaped void that only He can fill. We are meant to seek Him. Let Him satisfy you today.
Let’s Pray
“Lord, we put all other distractions aside and seek you. Satisfy my longing, quench my thirst. Amen.”
