We are taught as Americans to be independent and self-sufficient. Just shake it off. You got this. Pat on our back. But just think, if we were able to do life on our own, where would our relationship with Jesus be? He created mankind with a God-shaped void that only He can fill. Desperation is very intentional.
Growing up as the oldest in a large family with so many responsibilities, formed an independent spirit in me. Even though I loved Jesus as a little girl and giving Him my heart at age 5, I didn’t always turn to Him. I lived as if saying, I love you Jesus but I got this. I would pray for help only if it was the last resort.
When you’re in over your head, I’ll be there with you. When you’re in rough waters, you will not go down. If you’re between a rock and a hard place, it won’t be a dead end.
He showed me that independent life and mindset gives room for pride, selfishness and separation from Him.
Fast forward to today, I know that without Him, I can do nothing. I now live in constant awareness that I need Him.
Because I am God, your personal God. I paid a huge price for you. That’s how much you mean to me! That’s how much I love you! I’d sell off the whole world to get you back, trade the creation just for you.
He wants us in over our head. Humbly acknowledging that we can’t do anything without Him and leaving room for Him to display His power. He loves to easily accomplish what overwhelms us.
Every morning we need His Spirit to fill us again, to strengthen us for what’s ahead. Every day we need a fresh word that He speaks to our hearts, to help keep our focus on what’s more important. Trying to run this race of life without Jesus will do nothing but drain us dry.
So don’t be afraid: I’m with you.” -Isaiah 43:2-12
