We usually have such a struggle with seeing the bigger picture. We see the here and now and judge everything by our current moment. The more God gives me His perspective and maturity, the more I love the story of Lazarus.
Here Jesus’ best friend is sick. The same Jesus that touched and healed strangers on the spot wasn’t there when he was ill. It was heartbreaking for His family.
Mary and her sister Martha. (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped His feet with her hair.) So the sisters sent word to Jesus. Lord, the one you love is sick.
But Jesus reassured them that, This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it. Jesus intentionally did not heal Lazarus right away. In fact, he stayed where He was for two more days.
He then casually said, “Let’s go see Lazarus who has “fallen asleep” so I can wake Him up.” What we know as dead well Jesus sees as just asleep. Nothing is dead to Him who is the great resurrector.
“For your sake, so that you would believe, I am doing this”, he continues. Then Jesus being such a comforter to all who mourn, comforts His sisters, even weeping over their hurt. I love the faith of Martha when she says, “Lord if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.
Lazarus, come out!”
As I sit here the Holy Spirit is revealing something fresh to me. Just as our Lord was dead for three days before being resurrected, so was Lazarus a few days. That intentional wait is all for His glory. Just when it looks dead and gone, impossible and over, He shows up in His power so that we may believe.
What do you need to believe for today Is there something dead in your life that He has promised to resurrect We serve that same Lazarus raising, glory seeking, miracle working God today.
Let’s pray
“Lord, help me to believe in your power when things seem dead and hopeless. Give me your supernatural perspective. Be glorified in my life. Amen.”
